India scraps tender to import 240,000 tonnes of Maize: report |
India has axed a tender to import 240,000 tonnes of corn(maize), Reuters reported on Thursday. Trade and government officials who reported the news to Reuters foresee bigger-than-expected local summer harvest.
The move to cancel the tender comes close on the heels of questions raised on the availability of of non-genetically modified corn as demanded. India do not permit the cultivation of genetically modified food and has strict rules to ensure the imports do not contain trace of GMO.
Before scrapping the tender India has secured 250,000 tonnes of corn from Ukraine, as per the sources. Reuters says global traders such as Agrocorp, Concordia, Noble, Starcom and Daewoo International presented bids on Feb. 12 to supply 240,000 tonnes of corn in the range of $194.62 and $221.50 per tonne.
