Indore: Extended rainfall close to the maturity period of standing kharif crops has damaged urad creating a shortage in the market hurting daily operations of dal millers, claimed All India Dal Mills Association.
Dal millers have demanded that the government should allow imports of urad to ensure smooth supply of raw material to millers so that they continue operation and supply.
All India Dal Mills Association, president Suresh Agrawal said, “Production capacity of dal millers using urad as raw material has reduced sharply as a lot of crop has damaged due to rains in the country. Crop damage has hit supplies of fresh harvest in the mandi which is hitting the processing plants.”
The association demanded that the government should allow millers to import 1 lakh MT of urad this year and next year as well to overcome the shortage.
There are over 150 dal mills in Indore and 700 in Madhya Pradesh, one of the leading pulses producing state. These mills purchase raw pulses from market and processes it into dal of various grades.
Millers said, delay in fresh arrivals of tur in overseas countries is also hitting daily operations of mills. Millers have placed orders for tur with Kenya, Burma and Mozambique.
