Carpet Exports Surge 19% in April.

Subject: Carpet Exports Surge 19% in April
According to the recently released Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC) data, country’s carpet exports have registered a year-on-year rise of around 19 percent during April this year, due to soaring demand from western markets.

The exports grew from last April’s US$ 47.80 million to US$ 56.53 million in April 2011.

The present rise in demand is attributed to the revival of the US and the European markets after the economic slump. Another reason for the growth in carpet exports is a rise in demand in the new markets, particularly, Latin America and Middle East.

Exports of country’s major carpet items witnessed a surge in April this year. These included rugs, durries, handmade woollen carpets and druggets. Cotton carpets exports also registered a rise during the period.

Besides, a year-on-year rise has also been witnessed in export of other segments of handmade carpets made from silk, staple/synthetic, and woollen tufted carpets.

During fiscal 2010-11, India’s overall carpet exports witnessed a 24 percent rise and jumped to US$ 653 million from previous fiscal’s US$ 525 million, the CEPC data revealed. For the current 2011-12 fiscal, the Council has set a target to attain US$ 800 million in carpet exports.
