Expo allows members to network.

Subject: Expo allows members to network

The foreign business community takes a greater interest in the T&T market, as the Greater Tunapuna Chamber of Industry and Commerce hosts another expo at the Centre of Excellence in Macoya in October.

The show, called India in Style Expo, first started with “Indian businessmen, but it has grown where there are Columbia businesses, businesses from the Philippines,” said Peter Kanhai, president of the chamber. “We are looking to bring in businesses from China to partner with our local business community to put on these types of trade shows.” He said the show would help to create the synergies between businesses in T&T and those internationally. It would also broaden the parameter which consumers have to choose from.

He hopes the expo would not cost the chamber anything other than time. “Many of the business people that come into the country stand their own costs. The chamber facilitates them visiting T&T through assistance with work permits and visas. “As is natural to businessmen and to a business organisation, we don’t go into anything where it is going to cost. We look to see how we are going to profit from it,” Kanhai said.

This is Kanhai’s third term as president, having been re-elected last May. “By the time I am finished with this term, I would have served for five years,” Kanhai said. One of his challenges during his second term was guiding the chamber membership through the global economic downturn. “The expo gives the local business community the opportunity to share their problems and to network,” Kanhai said.
