India Bans Import Of Food Items From Japan.

India has banned the import of food items from Japan in view of the threat of contamination with radiation.

The ban will be in place for three months or till the time there is credible information that the radiation level has subsided to acceptable limits. Weekly reviews will be carried out by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India.

The decision was taken after a meeting to review the situation arising out of radiation leaks from nuclear power plants in Japan and possible contamination of Japanese food being imported into India.

The meeting concluded that since the radiation is spreading horizontally in parts of Japan, it may result in radioactive contamination in the supply chain of food exports from Japan, officials said.

The meeting was also attended by experts from the Board of Radiation and Isotope Technology, Bhabha Atomic Research Institute, the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board and Indian Institute of Toxicology Research.

The Japanese government set its first radiation safety standards for fish on Tuesday after Japan's tsunami- ravaged nuclear plant reported radioactive contamination in nearby seawater measuring at several million times the legal limit.
