India Careful With Table Grape Exports to Europe.

Subject: India Careful With Table Grape Exports to Europe
Table grapes have had a good price since November. Maybe a little high, say importers, meaning there is stagnation in the past ten days. The rainfall in South Africa caused 20% less supply and caused high prices. Now the South African season is ending. 8 Euro per 4.5 kilos is what's paid for the South African grapes. The prices before were around 11/12 Euro.

Importers expect the prices to go down more. "To a level that's normal for this time of year. The prices have been extremely high and you could sell everything you got in in January. This is slowly changing now and the prices will start dropping", says an importer.

At the moment there are Peruvian and Chilean grapes on the market. "Up until now Peru has had reasonable prices, especially of the variety Red Globe. The Peruvian export increases yearly. Last year Peru had a lot of rain, but the quality remained good. Chile is starting now and that's two or three weeks later than usual", says an importer.

At the moment the first grapes will be sent from India to Europe. Due to the residue problems last year India is careful with exporting grapes, which are mainly meant for the Russian market.

A small volume of grapes is expected from Brazil. This is due to the good home market. "That has changed in the past five years. A lot more fruit goes to up and coming markets such as Brazil and China. In the end fruit here will become more more expensive, it's just hard to convince the supermarkets of this."
