Date: 28-06-2010
Subject: INDIA: Government's Decision to Ban Cotton Export
COIMBATORE: Defending the Government's decision to ban cotton export, Union Textile Minister Dayanidhi Maran said this was taken to bring down the cotton prices, and also to prevent the country from facing the raw material shortage.

Talking to reporters here, Maran said once the cotton arrivals started picking up in the new season from October, the situation would be reviewed.

Stating that many spinning mills in Pakistan had to close down operations due to shortage of cotton, he said once the mills were closed down, there were cascading effect on other segments of the textile industry, such as weaving and knitwear.

India has exported 78 lakh bales of cotton during this year, he said, adding that farmers had also got good price, above the MSP fixed by the Government.

However, Maran said Indian spinning sector has no adequate capacity to absorb all the available cotton. The sector should add more spindles to make use of the cotton available in the country, he said.

Maran had attended a meeting of representatives of textile industry, including Confederation of Indian Textile Industry, Southern India Mills Association, Apparel Export Promotion Council, Tamil Nadu Spinning Mills Association and Tirupur Exporters' Association to discuss on bringing down the prices of cotton yarn.
