India, Malaysia To Expedite Deals For Improving Economic Ties.

India and Malaysia have agreed to expedite talks on finalising a double taxation avoidance agreement, and also hoped for early completion of the India-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement in Services and Investment, Indian External Affairs minister S.M. Krishna said here Tuesday.

‘We have had an in-depth exchange of views on how we can make early progress on issues such as a revised Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement and a MoU on Customs Cooperation, as well as operationalization of the Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism,’ Krishna told reporters after meeting with his counterpart, Anifah Aman to chair the fifth India-Malaysia Joint Commission Meeting,

‘We have also requested the Malaysian side to consider greater imports from India as a way of having balanced and sustainable trade in the long term,’ he said.

Krishna added that they hoped that with Malaysia being the ASEAN coordinator, the India-ASEAN free trade agreement in services and investment will be completed early.

‘We regard Malaysia as one of our key interlocutors in ASEAN and we discussed the importance of strengthening India-ASEAN ties. The early completion of the Free Trade Agreement in Services and Investments, which, we hope that Malaysia, as ASEAN coordinator, will facilitate, is desirable,’ said the minister.
