India: Medicines meant for exports to have bar codes from 1 July 2011.

India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry is going ahead with its compulsory ruling for locally-manufactured medicines meant for exports to have bar code. This will be effective from 1 July 2011, and is a response to allegations of counterfeit medication being exported out of the nation. Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council's Executive Director, P V Appaji said that the bar-coding strips will cost INR 0.30 (EUR 0 USD 0.01) each, and each packet of drugs will also feature numeric code that is generated randomly. He further said that the local pharmaceutical industry have until 31 March 2011 to voice their objections against the move, but reiterate that the implementation will still go ahead nonetheless.
