Date: 15-09-2010
Subject: India's imports of sensitive items up 13.6% in Q1
India's total imports of sensitive  items in April-June this financial year was Rs 16,190.13 crore, up 13.6 per cent from the level of Rs 14,252.09 crore recorded in the first quarter of 2009-10, an official statement said here today.

It said the gross import of all commodities during the first quarter of this eyar was Rs. 3,78,992 crore as compared to Rs.3,01,439 crore during the same period of last year.

Thus, the import of sensitive items constituted 4.7% and 4.3% of the gross imports during the first quarter of last year and this financial year, respectively.

According to the statement, the imports of pulses and cotton & silk have shown a decline at broad group level during the period. Imports of all other items such as edible oil, automobiles, fruits & vegetables (including nuts), rubber, milk & milk products, products of small scale industries (SSI), spices, marble & granite, alcoholic beverages and foodgrains have shown increase during the period.

In the edible oil segment, the import has increased from Rs. 5,856.52 crore last year to Rs.6,071.09 crore for the corresponding period of this year. A significant feature of edible oil import is that import of crude oil has gone up by 11.5% and that of refined oil has gone down by 40.6%. The increase in edible oil import is mainly due to substantial increase in import of soya-bean crude oil.

Indonesia, China, South Korea, Brazil, United States of America, Argentina, Germany, Thailand, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Czech Republic and Tanzania were the countries from where imports of sensitive items had gone up.

On the other hand, imports of such items from Myanmar, Malaysia, Ukraine, Japan, Canada, Cote D’ Ivoire, Benin, Australia, among other countries, had shown a decrease, the statement added.
