Subject: India's Sensitive Items Import Up By 38% In April-July 2011
India's total import of sensitive items for the period April-July 2011 totaled Rs.31,691.78 crore, compared to Rs.23,039.08 crore during the corresponding period of last year, registering a growth of around 38 percent, while gross import of all commodities was Rs.674,324.10 crore, compared to Rs.495,149 crore during the same period of last year.

Thus import of sensitive items constitutes around five percent of the gross imports during last year as well as current year.

Imports of milk and milk products, tea and coffee and food grains fell at broad group level during the period. Imports of all other items, namely, edible oil, automobiles, fruits and vegetables (including nuts), pulses, rubber, cotton and silk, products of SSI, spices, marble and granite and alcoholic beverages rose during the period under reference.

In the edible oil segment, the import during the period under review increased to Rs.14,273.60 crore from the Rs.8,763.70 crore last year. The imports of both crude oil as well as refined oil grew by 62 percent and 67 percent, respectively. The increase in edible oil import is mainly due to substantial increase in import of crude palm oil and its fractions.

Imports of sensitive items from Indonesia, China P RP, Malaysia, Argentina, Germany, Korea RP, Ukraine, US, Canada, Japan, Thailand, Benin, Ghana, United Kingdom went up, while those from Myanmar, Australia gone down.
