India Watching Imports From Japan.

Subject: India Watching Imports From Japan
The government today said that Japan is sharing all information on nuclear radiation from its plants in Fukushima, and India has all mechanism to check goods coming from the crisis-riddled country. “I can say that despite the terrible tragedy that has befallen Japan, their institutions are efficient and they are sharing all information with other countries, including India,” commerce and industry minister Anand Sharma said at a CII function here. India is closely watching food items imported from Japan, following blasts in the Fukushima nuclear reactors.

India mainly imports processed foods, sea food, oil seeds and seeds of vegetables such as cauliflower and cabbage from Japan along with diary products, confectionery items and tobacco products.

South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Philippines will test Japanese food imports for radiation.

When asked about the disruption in shipping lines between India and Japan, Sharma said because of the tsunami and earthquake, the movement of ships could be affected. He added that CII will assess the impact of Japan’s situation on India’s trade and investment.

“CII is preparing an internal document to asses the impact... it would be discussed by the government and industry,” the minister said.

Talking about the proposed national manufacturing policy, he said a “dedicated meeting” will be held by month-end to discuss the issue.
