Subject: Indian Handicrafts Exporters Bag Orders of Rs 550mn
Indian Handicrafts exporters bagged orders worth over Rs. 55 crore at three specialized trade fairs held one after another in Hong Kong which concluded on April 30, 2011.

As a long time strategy for promotion of handicrafts exports from India, Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) participate in the important trade shows held in Hong Kong on regular basis. This year also the Council participated in Hong Kong Houseware fair, Hong Kong Home Textiles fairs and Hong Kong Gifts & Premium Fair – all the three were held between April 20 to 30, 2011 at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

In all 127 Indian companies participated in these three exhibitions. The main products displayed by them were Kitchenware, Cutlery, Table Mats, Home Accessories, Floral Decoratives, Brassware, Aluminium ware, Tableware, Home Décor, Photo Frames, Bags and Decoratives, Gifts boxes, Jute Bags, Lanterns, Christmas Decoratives, Rugs and Mats, Woodware, Garden Decoratives, Cushion Covers, Stoles and Scarves, Dhurries, Patch Work, Quilts, tassels and tie back etc.

The total business generated at Hong Kong Houseware show was Rs. 27.85 crore out of which on the spot business was Rs. 8.25 crore and business under negotiations was Rs. 19.60 crore. In addition, 1178 enquiries received.

The total business generated at Home Textiles fair was Rs. 10.45 crore. Out of this on the spot business was Rs. 2.60 crore and business under negotiations was Rs. 7.85 crore. In addition, 308 enquiries have been received by the participating companies.

Hong Kong Gifts & Premium fair was also very good. The total business generated at this fair was around Rs. 17 crore out of which on the spot business was Rs. 3.05 crore and business under negotiation was Rs. 13.05 crore. 475 trade enquiries were also received by the 44 Indian companies.

“Of late, Hong Kong has emerged as one of the most important centers for concluding business through the medium of specialized trade fairs held one after another in the month of April every year covering important segments of lifestyles products under which many of the handicrafts of India are covered,” according to Mr. Raj Kumar Malhotra, Chairman of the Council.

Hong Kong has acquired a special place in the trade fair world and now attracts companies for participation and also buyers from nearly all important sourcing Nations.

“EPCH has decided to continue to participate in the fairs in Hong Kong so as to create a image of India as supplier of quality, unique and competitive priced products in the years to come,” Mr. Rakesh Kumar, Executive Director of EPCH, said.

Earlier, the trade fairs in Germany were considered to be more effective for obtaining export orders, but they largely confine to the buyers from the European world as against the Hong Kong which attracts buyers from all countries. The reason for the shift in importance to Hong Kong is presumably due to the fact that Hong Kong fairs offers not only products which are meant for sophisticated countries and for top end buyers but also cater to the medium and lower end buyers.
