Subject: Spices exports in January up 18% in value terms

Kochi, Feb. 28 Indian spices exports have grown by 18 per cent in value during January 2010 to Rs 430 crore over Rs 365 crore recorded during January last year.

Meanwhile, spices exports have recorded a 25 per cent growth in dollar terms to $93.57 million ($74.83 million).

The volume of spices exports also rose to 34,436 tonnes (30,870 tonnes) during the month.

Exports of small cardamom, garlic, nutmeg and mace, curry powder, spice oils and oleoresins have led the growth.

Cardamom

Cardamom exports grew to 310 tonnes (55 tonnes) valued at Rs 28.68 crore (Rs 3.13 crore) during the month.

The unit value realisation grew rapidly from Rs 569 a kg last year to Rs 925 a kg this year.

Cardamom exports during April-January grew to 1,500 tonnes (490 tonnes) valued at Rs 118.71 crore (31.01crore).

Chilli

Chilli exports grew by 15 per cent to Rs 1,030.44 crore (Rs 897.88 crore) during the first 10 months of the current year. It was more the firm trends in the global markets which increased the total value realisation rather than growth in volumes.

Export of nutmeg almost doubled to Rs 83.42 crore (Rs 43.72 crore) but the volume of exports also grew correspondingly.

Growth in volume

There has been a substantial increase in the value and volume of garlic export.

A small growth in volume of curry powder has resulted in a substantial growth in value. Curry powder exports grew to Rs 160 crore (Rs 139.49 crore).

In the case of ginger and turmeric, even though there is a marginal decline in volume, the value realisation has increased due to better unit value realisation.

On a monthly basis, there has been a sharp fall in volume and value of pepper exports during January.

Export of turmeric and cumin also fell in volume.
