Subject: Tyre industry seeks safeguard duty on passenger car radials import
New Delhi, March 30 Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association will approach the Director General of Safeguards to seek a safeguard duty on the import of passenger car radial tyres. This is in view of the growing imports of tyres, especially from China and South Korea.

“We will meet the Government soon asking for a safeguard duty to be imposed on passenger car radials,” said Mr Raghupati Singhania, Chairman, ATMA, and Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of JK Tyres.
licensing policy

In November last year, following the recommendations of ATMA, the Government imposed a licensing policy on import of radial bus and truck tyres.

According to the policy, dealers and foreign companies are required to procure licenses from the Government to ship radial tyres for trucks and buses into the country.

When asked if there was any reduction in imports of radial tyres of commercial vehicles following the Government’s decision, Mr Singhania told Business Line, “We are in the process of collating data. But based on our estimates, we feel that imports would have dropped by about 10 per cent since then.”

According to Mr Rajiv Buddhiraja, Director-General of the industry association, they had filed a petition for passenger car radial tyres in December, but there has been no action so far.

“The Government says that they will look into such issues on a fast track basis. But it’s been three months and the case has not been initiated yet,” he said.
