New Delhi: India is looking to create special farm sector indices as part of a wider plan focused on targeted policy interventions to lift agri productivity and incomes after efforts to introduce reforms in the sector, through the later recalled farm laws, failed to take off.


A senior government official told ET that the preparatory work had started at the level of Niti Aayog as well as the ministry of agriculture and farmers welfare, and that the policy interventions may be rolled out after the general elections in 2024. The idea is to ensure a sustainable food system for the country while moving towards natural farming and ensuring a significant increase in farm income which in turn will have an impact on the rural economy by boosting demand and consumption, the official said.


"Some of the key interventions that may come in over the next few years include targeted policy measures to promote sustainable farming, greater incentives to switch to crops requiring less water and integrating farmers with the supply chain to reduce middle men," the official, quoted above, said requesting anonymity.
