India: Grape export lifts again after dip.

Date: 06-03-2013
Subject: India: Grape export lifts again after dip
Since 2000 India has been growing strongly as an exporter of grapes. In 2000 it exported 16,000 tonnes, and in 2008 the export hit a peak of 117,000 tonnes. After that it was a lot less due to smaller harvests, 64,000 tonnes in 2010. Since then export increased again.

The export is strongly focussed on neighbouring country Bangladesh, but Holland is the second main buyer of grapes from India. The export to Holland shows a similar tend as the total.

In 2000 it was a modest amount, and in 2008/2010 a peak was reached at around 25,000 tonnes. In 2011 it was only 14,000 tonnes. In 2012 it had increased again to 23,000 tonnes.

The United Kingdom is another important buyer of Indian produce within the EU. The picture here is the same again: from modest amounts to a peak of 13,000 tonnes and a sharp decline: 5,400 tonnes in 2011 and then a recovery.

Worldwide Chile is the most important exporter of grapes by far, followed by Italy, the USA, and Holland in 4th place. Then come Turkey, Spain, Mexico, Peru, (re-exporter) Hong Kong and China, and then (in 2011) India comes 12th on the list. The United States lead the list of importers.

Russia is third and Holland is fourth. Then come Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Hong Kong, China and Poland.
