Subject: Vietnam proposes to restrict imports of Indian drugs
NEW DELHI: Vietnam is the latest country to hit back at Indian pharma companies, proposing to restrict the import of certain drugs. Vietnam's move, is seen as the latest setback, after the US authorities cracked down against Indian giants such as Ranbaxy. While the European Union attacked Indian generic medicines by terming them fakes, the campaign has also caught fancy in African countries.

A government official played down the concerns, saying that these were restrictions that the Indian government was studying. "We have received a list and we are studying it. We will be ready with our stance in a few days," a senior official told TOI. Media reports suggested that Vietnamese authorities had decided to impose a ban on imports from over 40 Indian companies due to poor safety standards. Indian pharma exports to Vietnam were estimated at $140 million in 2012-13, and were near $110 million during April-December 2013-14.
