Subject: Apparel Exports Up By 1.66% In February
Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), the apex body of apparel exporters in India has compiled data which reflected that apparel exports increases by 1.66 percent in February 2011.

Apparel exports had followed the previous month trend and exports increased by 1.6 per cent from previous month and totaled US$ 1163 million in Feb. 2011. Increase in the exports from the previous FY of same month has been quite substantial and reached at 23.99 per cent; however, cumulative figure for April- Feb. 2011 rose by 2.04 per cent in dollar terms. Cumulative figure for April-Feb. 2011 stood US$ 9883 million.

In rupee terms, the exports have increased by 21.58 percent in February 2010-11 over the same month of previous FY. There was substantial increase in exports from previous month of this FY. In rupee terms, the cumulative figure of export for April- February 2010-11 was Rs. 45081 Crores.

As per OTEXA, the dollar per square meter equivalent (SME) saw a rise for almost all garment supplier countries in January to December this year by 16.8 percent. The increase in unit value per SME was by 2.4 percent for India, while 1.18 percent, 2.15 percent and 2.87 percent of China, Vietnam, and Indonesia has declined respectively.

Apparel Imports of US

Apparel imports of the United States witnessed an increase of 22.4 per cent in Jan 2011 from the corresponding period of previous year and amounted to 6.1 billion dollars. For the same period, US imports of apparel from India increased by 22.1 per cent to 302 million dollars against 248 million USD in Jan. 2010.

US imports from China saw an increase of 20.9 per cent in Jan, 2011 over the corresponding period of last year and all the other major suppliers like Vietnam, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Mexico also witnessed increase of 19.7 per cent, 16.2 per cent, 53.8 per cent, and 8.3 per cent respectively. Among the top 6 suppliers Bangladesh registered maximum growth from the previous year of same period.

Apparel Imports of EU

EU’s apparel import accounted for 81.8 billion dollars from January to December 2010 with an increase of 2.6 percent over the same period of previous year. India’s export to EU amounted to 5.56 billion dollars with decline of 1.8 percent.

For the same period minimum decline in EU’S import is registered by Bangladesh (7 percent) followed by Turkey (5.1 percent), China (4.6 percent) while India registered negative growth of 1.8 percent from January to December 2010.

Apparel Imports of Canada

Canada’s imports of apparel from India from January to December of this year accounted for 274 million dollars with a decline of 9.3 percent as compared to corresponding period last year. Its total import of apparel from the world in this year (January to December 2010) amounted to 7.5 billion dollars with an increase of 10 percent.

China, Bangladesh, the United States and India were the top suppliers of apparel to Canada. Among the top apparel suppliers, China, Bangladesh and United States were the three countries of which apparel exports to Canada saw an increase of 9.2 , 16.8 and 4.9 percent respectively whereas India’s exports declined by 9.3 percent from January to December 2010.
