Coffee Exports Down 4% at 24,041 Tones in Sept.

Date: 20-10-2011
Subject: Coffee Exports Down 4% at 24,041 Tones in Sept
India`s coffee exports declined 4% to 24,041 tonnes in September this year due to low stocks and the weak global economic situation.

The country had exported 25,128 tones of the brew in the year-ago period, according to Coffee Board data.

``Coffee exports could have been lower in September, but since the DEPB export scheme was ending last month, exporters cleared their stocks, thus limiting the decline,`` the All-India Coffee Exporters` Association President, Ramesh Raja, told PTI.

Outlook for overseas shipments during October to December period is on the negative side due to low domestic stocks and the weak global economic scenario.

The only silver lining is the weak rupee against the US dollar, which increases the value of dollar exports in rupee terms, he said.

In the first nine months of the current calendar year, shipments of the brew rose 30% to 2.92 lakh tones from 2.24 lakh tones in the same period last year.

India largely exports coffee to Italy, Germany, Russia, Belgium and Spain.
