Subject: Cotton Prices To Stay Higher For Some More Time
Farmers in Tamil Nadu are recommended to go for cotton cultivation to get better prices, sowing of which should be ended before March.

The prices of the cotton crop, to be harvested during June-September would be around Rs 5,500 to Rs 6,200 per quintal and farmers could reap remunerative prices, Domestic Marketing and Intelligence Cell (DEMIC) in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, said today.

The cell, in order to facilitate farmers to take sowing decision, has analysed the price behaviour at Avanashi Cooperative Marketing Society, largest cotton market, and arrived at a conclusion on the prices.

Tamil Nadu has increased the cotton area to 1.30 lakh hectare in 2010-11 compared to 1.04 lakh last year and summer cotton cultivation is exclusive in the State, DEMIC said.

Cotton prices in India have doubled from Rs 3,400 in February 2010 to Rs 7,000 per quintal in Feb 2011, it said.
