Ginger Export More Than Doubles in Apr-Jan This Fiscal |

New Delhi, Mar 6 (PTI) Ginger export more than doubled to 10,500 tonnes in April-January 2010-11, according to the Spice Board data.
The country had exported 4,650 tonnes of ginger, considered as ''betting crop'' of farmers, during the same period in 2009-10.
India, China and Indonesia are the top three ginger producers in the world.
The country''s overall export of spices rose by almost 5 per cent during the period compared to previous year on back of rise of shipments in ginger, garlic, fennel and chilli.
India exported 433,455 tonnes of spices in 2010-11 against 413,895 tonnes in 2009-10 previous year, the data showed.
The foreign exchange earned by the country in the period under consideration rose by 23.46 per cent to USD 1203.30 million as against USD 974.57 million in the year-ago time.
In rupee terms, spice exports rose by 18 per cent to Rs 5,485.4 crore in April-January 2010-11 period as against Rs 4,646.5 crore in the corresponding period previous year.
Another spice whose exports jumped during the period was garlic -- used both in food and medicine.
Garlic export increased by 78 per cent to 16,500 tonnes during April-January 2010-11 against 9,250 tonnes the year ago period, it said.
On the other hand, imports of Nutmeg & Mace and Cardamom (small) rose significantly during the period.
Nutmeg & Mace import rose by 51 per cent while that of Cardamom (small) by 49 per cent during 2010-11, it said.
Among other spices, imports of Cumin rose by 36 per cent while that of Celery increased by 30 per cent and other seeds that includes Mustard, Aniseed, Dill seed and Poppy seed) by 23 per cent, the data said.
