Date: 07-10-2010
Subject: Govt Estimates Fertiliser need at 27.4 MT for Rabi Season
New Delhi, (PTI) Fertiliser demand is estimated to increase by around 1.5 million tonnes to 27.4 million tonnes (MT) during the ongoing rabi season compared to the requirement in the last year''s winter crop season.

According to a senior fertiliser ministry official, the requirement would go up this year due to an expected increase in area under sowing during the rabi season.

While the urea requirement has been estimated at 15.4 MT, DAP, MOP and NPK needs have been pegged at 5.2 MT, 2.5 MT and 4.3 MT respectively.

India had used 14.4 MT urea, 5 MT DAP, 2.5 MT MoP and 4 MT NPK during the last rabi season.

Out of the total requirement, government estimates that 10.85 MT urea, 1.88 MT DAP and 4.74 MT NPK could be supplied indigenously to partially meet the need.

Imports to the tune of 10.1 MT would be required during the season, which includes 4 MT urea, 2.81 MT DAP, 2.5 MT MoP and 0.83 MT NPK.

The country has an opening stock of 0.81 MT urea, 0.51 MT DAP, 0.25 MT MoP and 0.43 MT NPK.

Meanwhile, during April-September period of the current year, India imported 2.58 MT urea, 5.78 MT DAP, 2.65 MT MoP and 0.6 MT NPK.

The country had imported 2.53 MT urea, 3.89 MT DAP and 1.71 MT MoP during the same period last year.
