Govt Urged To Raise Export Quota to 9 Million Bales.

Date: 18-12-2010
Subject: Govt Urged To Raise Export Quota to 9 Million Bales
As the time limit for cotton exports was over on December 15, various farmers’ organizations are trying to raise the ceiling on cotton exports from the present 5.5 million bales to some 9 million bales (one bale = 170 kg).

These farmers’ organizations had put forward their demand during a meeting with the Minister of Agriculture, Government of India, held in the capital city of Delhi.

Cotton growers are apprehending that if the ceiling on cotton export is not raised, it may lead to excess availability of cotton in the local market, leading to a sharp decline in the commodity price.

These farmers’ organizations also asserted that it is very much necessary to raise the ceiling on the export quota so as to prevent excess cotton from entering in the local market. It was also revealed that the Agriculture Minister has assured them that the issue of raising the cotton export quota would be taken up for consideration during the meeting.

The cotton growers from Gujarat carried out a 17-day rally – 'Kisan Swaraj Yatra' right from the Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat to Rajghat in New Delhi, which covered 20 states so that maximum support of the farmers, from various states on several issues, could be gathered.
