India Bans Chinese Telecom Imports.

Subject: India Bans Chinese Telecom Imports
May 3 – India blocked the import of telecommunications equipment made by Chinese companies on security grounds last week.

The Department of Telecom sent out a formal order banning the importation of Chinese equipment, a move that could impact a number of large Chinese vendors in India’s fast growing tech market.

According to officials, there had already been an unwritten order for several months but that the formal order was released to some major operators that were on the verge of finalizing deals with Chinese equipment manufacturers.

The Straits Times reports that the order came after India’s Home Ministry raised concerns that telecom equipment from some countries, like China, could have embedded spyware, giving intelligence agencies access to telecom networks in India.

Bilateral trade between China and India is expected to exceed US$100 billion this year barring a major trade war.
