MUMBAI: India’s tea production in November 2010 rose 3.7 percent from a year ago to 93.92 million kg, data with the state-run Tea Board showed.

India is the world’s second biggest producer of tea after China.

However, output during January to November stood at 907.7 million kg, down 1.43 percent from 920.9 million kg in the same period last year, as a pest attack during middle of the year in Assam trimmed output.

A pest attack of helopeltis adversely affected tea gardens in the northeastern state of Assam, India’s top producer.

“Tea prices rose in 2010 due to the production shortfall and the process of price hardening is likely to continue in 2011 as well,” S Patra, Joint Secretary, Indian Tea Association, told Reuters.

India exports CTC (crush, tear, curl) tea variety mainly to Egypt, Pakistan and the UK, and the premium orthodox variety to Iraq, Iran and Russia. reuters
