Subject: India's Coffee Output Likely To Rise By 7 pc: ICO
New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI) Coffee production in India is expected to rise by about 7 per cent to 5.4 million bags (about 3,24,00 tonnes) in 2011-12 coffee year, a report by the International Coffee Organisation (ICO) said today.

However, the global body has pointed out that the exports from India -- the world's sixth largest producer -- could come down due to rising domestic demand and low stocks.

Coffee production in 2010-11 was about 5.06 million bags of 60 kg each (about 3,03,600 tonnes). Coffee year runs from October to September. But exports are likely to be lower given the increase in domestic consumption and the reconstitution of stocks, ICO said in its report.

According to the government-run Coffee Board of India, production of the brew is expected at 3,22,250 tonnes in the 2011-12 coffee year while the country had produced 3,02,000 tonnes in the previous coffee year.

ICO has also come out with estimates of coffee production for other major exporters. While coffee production in Brazil is expected at 43.15 million bags, Vietnam is estimated to produce 20 million bags.

The output of the brew in Indonesia and Mexico is tipped at 6.7 million bags and 4.7 million bags, respectively, ICO said.
