Subject: India’s Frost Conditions May Boost Canadian Dry Pea Exports
ALBERTA : With India pea crops suffering a ‘frost-bite’, and a subsequent fall in yields, Canadian farmers are expecting a good time, as the event can boost their exports.

India’s dry pea output for the season is expected at around 550000 tons, down from previous estimates of 700,000 tons due to cold conditions and frost in some areas, according to canadiancattlemen.ca.

India is a major importer of pulses and the country’s deficit hovers around 3 million tons.

In the previous year, Canada had exported 2.8 million tons of dry peas with a substantial quantity of 68% being exported to India. But this time around the total global Canadian dry peas export figures are expected to touch only 2.3 million tons.

Overall pulses exports of Canada may touch 3.13 million tons, down from 3.687 million tons for 2010-11.

Canadian carry-in stocks of pulses for 2011-12 crop year are expected to be at just 300,000 tons, a pale comparison to 795,000 a year ago.

Currently, the market rates of pulses are at $8 per bushel for green peas and $7.79 for yellow peas.
