India Tea Production up 6.5% in September.

NEW DELHI : India’s tea plantation area, Assam and Bengal have witnessed a rise in the tea production during the month of September, 2010.

According to the recent statement by the Tea Board of India, the tea production in the country grew 6.5% for the month of September to 108.1 million kg against 101.4 million kg registered in the corresponding period last year.

However, the production of tea during the first nine months of the current year has been lower by 3.7 million kg to 692.9 million kg, as against 696.7 million kg in the corresponding month last year.

As per the Tea Board estimates, the country's exports might go up in the range of 5% to 10% during the current fiscal. India exports CTC (crush-tear-curl) variety of tea mainly to Egypt, Pakistan and the UK and the premium orthodox variety of tea to Iraq, Iran and Russia.

Assam, the leading tea growing state in India witnessed tea output rising over 7 million kg during September, up from 55.6 million kg in September 2009 to 62.7 million kg during the latest month.

West Bengal also reported an increase of 3.4 million kg in tea production in the month under consideration, due to surge in output in the Terai region.

South-Indian states have reported a decline in Tea production. The total tea output during the month of September declined by 4.2 million kg to 18.3 million kg, as compared to 22.6 million kg in the corresponding month last year.
