Subject: Onion export in August rises on demand from Bangla
New Delhi, Sept 7 (PTI) Robust demand from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka pushed India's onion export up marginally in August at 1.51 lakh tonnes, arresting a slump in July after Pakistan cut down on imports from India due to a bumper crop there.

"After a 24 per cent slump in July, India's onion export touched 1,50,835 tonnes in August, compared with 1,49,503 tonnes in the year-ago period, mainly due to good demand from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka," said a senior official with Nafed, which oversees onion export.

India has exported 8.96 lakh tonnes of onions so far this fiscal against 7.81 lakh tonnes a year earlier, he added.

Importantly, proximity with Indian ports has come to the rescue of exporters, as traders from Bangldesh are importing heavily from India, and not from Pakistan which is shipping to some other countries that had purchased from India last year.
