Soaring Chilli Prices In Indonesia Present Export Opportunity For India |

KOCHI : Soaring chilli prices in Indonesia is presenting a hot opportunity for Indian exporters as the current figures there are between $10-11 a kilogram, according to Washington Post.
Jakarta post has reported adolescents getting nabbed for stealing five chillies from a shop in a region of East Java.
Unusually heavy rains have made a dent on the crop output in Indonesia with the government there presenting two solutions: either grow chilli in the kitchen garden or do away with using chilli.
But chilli for Indonesians is to what onion for Indians and the decision has not gone down well with the people there. The consumer price index there has gone up by 7% in December. At its peak, the prices of chilli climbed to $15, a jump of 600% from $2.2 a kilogram.
India is a major exporter of chilli to Indonesia and in 2009-10, exports were at 10267.5 MT, worth Rs.5563.6 lakhs.
