Subject: Traders unite against FDI move, shops remain shut
KOCHI: Shops and establishments, including restaurants, remained shut on Wednesday in protest against the government move to allow foreign direct investment in the retail sector. The strike was called by the Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samiti and Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association (KHRA).

Locating eateries, office-stationery and provision shops was a tedious affair on Wednesday. Those who had arrived in Kochi from far-off places had no choice but to check into high-end hotels or walk around trying to find less expensive food outlets and accommodations.

Petty shops and juice outlets did brisk business during peak hours. Canteens and hotels operating at railway stations, high court and hospitals also experienced an unusual rush. "I came to know about the strike after reaching Kerala. Fortunately, only shops were shut so I was able to locate a hotel," said Arun Ramachandran, a passenger who arrived by Kerala Express.

It was not an easy day for housewives who forgot to stock essential items. Those who missed shopping on Tuesday had to borrow from neighbours or friends. "We were forced to visit interior areas to buy groceries and check if some shops were open or not," said Mumtaz M, a housewife.
