Subject: We will import more Indian goods: China

Beijing, Jan 20: China assured India it will make efforts to import more Indian goods or services to narrow bilateral trade gap, which has become a cause of concern for the Indian government and industry.

The assurance was given by Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao when the Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma called on him.

"China would do its part in working towards this objective (reducing trade gap)," a statement by the Indian government quoting Wen said.

The Chinese premier said both sides could work together to ensure more balanced trade.

India ran a big trade gap with China in 2008-09, with imports exceeding exports by about USD 7 billion. For the year, China was India's largest trade partner.

Earlier, while addressing the Joint Economic Group (JEG) meeting, Sharma expressed India's desire to expand exports to China.

Sharma impressed on China to increase imports of IT and ITES to address the trade imbalance. India also asked for removal of tariff and non-tariff barriers to Indian power plant equipment.
