Fertiliser subsidies need a closer look : C Rangarajan.

Hyderabad, Sep 10 (PTI) Fertiliser subsidies need a close look and there is need to take some action to bring them down, Dr C Ranagarajan, chairman of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council said here today.

Speaking at the College of Defence Management, he said "I agree that the fertiliser subsidies need a close look and we need to take some action in order to bring them down."

He said there is debate going on the subject as the base product for fertiliser is crude oil which is dependent on international prices.

"There is one suggestion that farmers be given some minimum quantity of fertilisers at subsidised prices and rest should be purchased at market price," Rangarajan said, adding that the government has taken steps to remove subsides on fuel but removal of food subsidy is difficult as it affects food security for poor people.
