Subject: Noida protest reason: Why workers are up in arms, pelting stones, blocking key roads, torching cars
Workers from the Hosiery Complex in Phase 2 of Uttar Pradesh’s Noida staged protests demanding higher wages, which later turned violent. Protesters allegedly vandalised vehicles and property and resorted to stone-pelting during a clash with police.

A large number of workers gathered on Monday to press for a salary hike, with a car also set on fire during the unrest.

Heavy police deployment was made at the site to bring the situation under control.

On Sunday, Noida District Magistrate Medha Roopam held a meeting with the state’s Principal Secretary (Labour) and Labour Commissioner to discuss issues related to workers’ welfare, including overtime pay, bonuses and workplace safety.

Protests that began about a week ago in Noida have now spread to Greater Noida, with thousands of workers staging demonstrations across industrial areas on Monday. A similar protest had taken place on Saturday, when workers from factories in the Ecotech area gathered and attempted to block roads.

Police intervened, leading to a confrontation between workers and officials. During the unrest, firing was reported and a woman worker from Bihar sustained bullet injuries. She was hospitalised after being hit by two bullets.

The incident further escalated tensions, intensifying the protests. Videos circulating on social media from the Ecotech-3 police station area show large crowds and alleged gunshots, though their authenticity has not been independently verified.

As per news agency PTI, workers in Noida have been demanding higher minimum wages, especially after the Haryana government recently raised monthly wages from around Rs 14,000 to Rs 19,000 — a jump of nearly 35%. In contrast, wages in Uttar Pradesh remain significantly lower at around Rs 13,000, fuelling resentment among workers employed in the region’s vast industrial belt.

The protests are being led by workers from garment export units in the Hosiery Complex, who are demanding higher wages.

Exporter and industry representative Lalit Thakural said some external elements were attempting to disrupt the situation. He added that efforts were underway to engage with workers, claiming that over 80% have understood the discussions. According to him, most of the workers’ demands have been accepted and wage revisions will be implemented in line with government orders. He also urged workers not to pay heed to rumours.

Despite these assurances, protests have intensified, with workers from companies in both Noida and Greater Noida joining the demonstrations.
