Brass parts from Gujarat shine in China.

Subject: Brass parts from Gujarat shine in China
AHMEDABAD: The ceramic industry might be not doing well, but the brass parts industry in Jamnagar has a reason to cheer - this industry has its share in the Chinese market. Brass door fittings and electronic parts like screws of switches are among others that have their market in China.

Sources in the industry said that around 10% of the products manufactured in Jamnagar is exported directly to China, while around another 10% is exported via Malaysia. An office-bearer said that China too has a major brass parts manufacturing sector but when it comes to producing small parts, they depend on Jamnagar.

According to Jamnagar Factory Owners Association president Lakhabhai Keshwala, China also depends on Jamnagar for hardware manufacturing. He said that small brass parts used in electric products like toys and other equipment, small screws used for switches fitting are being sent from Jamnagar.

Export Import Metal Merchant Association president Kantibhai Joshi said, "Some parts are sent directly to China, but majority of the export is through Malaysia.''

There are around 3,000 brass parts manufacturing units in Jamnagar. But there is a decline in demand for these products, which began in 2013. Volatility in international brass prices and fluctuations in the value of the rupee against the US dollar gave bad times for the Jamnagar units.

According to industry sources, barely 100 tonnes to 125 tonnes of brass scrap is now being consumed a day compared to 250 tonnes a day earlier.
