US Raises Import Duties on Warm-Water Shrimp |

GLOBAL - The US Department of Commerce (DoC) has imposed anti-dumping import duties on frozen warm-water shrimp from India, Malaysia, China, Thailand, Viet Nam, Ecuador and Indonesia, due to fears that subsidised low price imports are harming the local industry.
The DoC has imposed the following duties: Thailand 2.09 per cent, China 5.76 per cent, Malaysia 62.74 per cent, India 5.91 per cent and Viet Nam 6.07 per cent.
Indonesia and Ecuador also have subsidies of 0.81 per cent and 0.39 per cent respectively, but the amounts are too low for duty to be collected.
Malaysia will be hardest hit if its duty is not relaxed, meaning it will no longer be a major supplier of shrimps to the US.
In 2012, Malaysia exported about 50 million pounds of shrimp to the US.
The final decision will be made in mid-August.
