In an order to promote trade between the two countries, India will now export pomegranate to Australia. This move comes after months of negotiations and completion of the required protocols after months of negotiations between the two countries.
Australia will open its doors for Indian pomegranates following an import-risk assessment involving significant collaboration and discussions between Indian and Australian authorities.
This growing demand for pomegranates is because of its use in cooking shows and restaurants, which can be partly met by India's exports said Australia's High Commissioner to India, Barry O'Farrell in an official statement. He further commented, “While Australia already produces pomegranates, India is well placed as one of the world’s largest pomegranate producers to meet shortfalls in the Australian market.”
Trade benefits of this deal
The High Commissioner further added that This two-way agricultural trade can benefit India, as well as the consumers, can enjoy Australian walnuts, almonds and beer. On the other hand, the Australian consumers can enjoy pomegranates of course, but at the same time Indian mangoes and table grapes as well. It will also provide a livelihood to the Australians while benefitting the economies of both countries. However, India is not too keen on Australian dairy products as farmers need a livelihood as well.
O'Farrell also said that “there are bio-security conditions which must be met by Australian importers, and I encourage Indian exporters to work with their customers and Indian export authorities to ensure Australia’s importing country requirements are met.”
