Pulse import crisis looms, warns India Pulses and Grains Association.

PUNE: The India Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA) recently submitted a representation to the Union ministry of agriculture on methyl bromide (MBR) fumigation, which is impacting imports.

Currently, food shipments are fumigated at India's ports. After March 31, the plant quarantine authority will only accept cargo that has been fumigated with methyl bromide at the country of export.

IPGA said the subject of compliance of MBR fumigation on imported pulses runs the risk of blocking adequate imports of pulses into the country. It has requested the government to grant a one-year relaxation and allow the fumigation to be done at the port of arrival without any penalty.
