Subject: Foxconn too in talks to revive plant in Tamil Nadu
CHENNAI: The electronics manufacturing hub of Sriperumbudur, which was likened to Shenzhen in China during its peak but had been hit hard by the closure of the Nokia plant, once the largest mobile phone making unit in the world, is all set for a redux.

Taiwan-based Foxconn, the world' s largest contract manufacturer of smartphones, could well be following Motorola, now owned by Chinese personal computer and smartphones maker Lenovo, by restarting operations in Sriperumbudur.

Foxconn is in talks with the Tamil Nadu (TN) government to revive its plant at Sriperumbudur near here, a senior official said. Lenovo announced on Tuesday that it has started making smartphones at Sriperumbudur through a contract manufacturer.

Foxconn has just started manufacturing Sony Bravia LED units at another plant in Sriperumbudur. The plant has a capacity of 5 lakh units per year. " Foxconn has been in touch with us. The talks are still on. They are thinking of converting the special economic zone (SEZ where the plant is located) into a DTA (domestic tariff area)," the official said.

The Taiwanese giant has about 300 acres of land in the SEZ and a conversion to DTA will allow phones made in the plant to be sold in the domestic market, the official stated.

Foxconn too is in talks with the TN govt to revive its plant in the state.
