Subject: ‘PM silent but happy with JNPT’s productivity’
NAVI MUMBAI: Prime minister Narendra Modi paid a flying visit to JNPT, billed as 'India's global economic gateway', on Sunday for laying the foundation stone of fourth container terminal.

JNPT, the PM's choice for 'Make in India' mission of transforming the nation into a manufacturing hub, has embarked on an efficiency path. The liquid cargo terminal is helping save 2.5 hours per vessel in the handling operations while an inter-terminal cargo terminal saves 7.5 km for each round of operations.

The port staff is also being trained to match up.

JNPT deputy chairman, Neeraj Bansal told TOI that they are working hard. "We are ensuring that efficiency and productivity is our hallmark for handling containers. If the PM chose to be silent during his Sunday visit it meant that he is happy with the speed and focus of the port towards achieving the objective," he added.

The PM did not address the gathering except for wishing the Singapore high commissioner and CEO of PSA International on the dais and a chat with voice-over artist and presenter/compere Harish Bhimani.

The fourth terminal will enable JNPT to become one of the ten global ports that can handle 10 million teus (a measurement in terms of containers of twenty units) annually.

The fourth terminal will be completed in two phases and add capacity of 4.8 million teus.

Global giant, Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) is developing the fourth terminal on a revenue sharing model (JNPT's share is 35.79%) and the MoU is for 30 years. The work is being executed by PSA India subsidiary, Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals.

PM Modi had laid the foundation stone for multi-product JNPT SEZ and port road connectivity on August 16, 2014.
