SEZs part of future plans.

Date: 04-10-2010
Subject: SEZs part of future plans
Two years ago we leased out this land and built the office from ground up by knocking down the earlier building. We built two facilities within the NSEZ and have five acres to us. With the STPI tax exemptions very likely to run out in March 2011, we made a conscious effort to move into a SEZ. In Noida we were operating out of two offices in Sector 58 that were in an STPI, but moved our new BPO business in the SEZ. In addition to the tax benefits, there are definite advantages to be in the SEZ.

Earlier STPIs that were constructed did not have ample parking space. But that is available inside a secure SEZ with 24x7 security. With the STPI scheme likely to run out next year, we will end up paying 100% corporate tax. At the Noida SEZ, there are no power issues, which is particularly rare in northern India. We do a lot of critical work for financial services companies, insurance companies, and our business cannot stop even for three-four minutes. So we need continuous power and ample security.

The ease of doing business is exceptionally good here— the enabling factors are all in place and are working extremely well. International clients are curious that we work in a SEZ; they check with us how a SEZ operates. Clients really love this place. If I get a customer on the campus, he is extremely impressed, as it is well-organised and nicely greened up. In Gandhinagar SEZ, Patni is in a private SEZ; in Pune we have taken 30-35 acres of leased land in a government SEZ. Even for further expansion, we will always consider a SEZ, as the entire ecosystem around it is very positive.
