Subject: Afghan pharma firms to seek JVs at Vibrant Gujarat
AHMEDABAD: More than 40 pharmaceutical companies from Afghanistan are expected to participate in the Vibrant Gujarat summit. The companies, mostly medicine importers, are a part of the delegation that will attend the summit and Pharmexcil exhibition to be held during from January 9 to 11, 2015.

According to sources, these Afghan companies are looking at joint venture opportunities with Gujarat's pharma companies to manufacture generics, formulations, syrups, over-thecounter drugs and medical disposables.

Abdul Qaher Jawad, head of allopathic medicine under the ministry of public health (MoPH) in Afghanistan said, "Afghan companies are keen to gain knowledge during the summit, network with Indian pharma companies and to explore joint venture opportunities." The delegation will be headed by Jawad and MoPH's head of pharmaceutical establishments, Lutfie Abdul Nasire. The delegation will mostly comprise medicine importers, manufacturers and medicine equipment importers.

Afghanistan is mainly dependent on imports for all kinds of goods and services, including pharmaceutical products. Currently, the country has an estimated annual medicine consumption of $400 million and only 2% of consumption is met by local producers while the 98% is met by imports, mostly from Pakistan and other countries like Iran, India, Korea and China.
