Apparel Exports Up 42% to USD 1.2bn in June |
Apparel exports jumped up by 42% year-on-year to USD 1.2 billion in June on rising demand from countries like the US.
The exports stood at USD 853 million in June 2010, according to the figures provided by the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC).
"We are getting good number of orders from the US, but the demand from European market is still sluggish," an AEPC official said. The US and Europe together account for over 70% of India's total garment exports.
The council expects apparel exports to touch USD 14 billion in the 2011-12 fiscal. In the last fiscal, these exports grew 4.4% to USD 11.1 billion compared to the previous fiscal.
The apparel industry employs about 70 lakh people in the country, out of which almost half are engaged in the export sector.
