Australia Says to Continue Talks on India Uranium Export Ban |
MELBOURNE - Australia will continue to discuss Canberra's ban on exports of uranium to India, but that does not signal any plans to lift the ban, Foreign Minister Keving Rudd said on Thursday.
"That does not contain within it any assumption of a change in policy," Rudd told reporters after holding talks with India's Minister for External Affairs Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna.
The ruling Labor Party maintains a ban on uranium sales to countries that have not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, despite U.S. President Barack Obama last year supporting Indian membership of the 45-nation Nuclear Supplier Group.
But the policy is expected to come up for review and possibly a vote at a triennial conference of the ruling party and union supporters in December. (Reporting by Sonali Paul; Editing by Ed Davies)
