Ban on Onion Export to India to Stay: Govt.

ISLAMABAD - The government of Pakistan on Monday decided to maintain ban on onions' exports to India through land route via Wagha border, however, it is likely to allow to cross only those loaded trucks with onions standing at Indian border.

"Due to ban on onions' exports, the local vegetables dealers feared a huge financial loss, as according to them, the commodity can decay if the government did not allow them to cross the Indian boarder. Therefore the government is seriously contemplating allowing the trucks loaded with onions standing at border to go to India and the decision can be taken in next couple of days," an official of the Commerce Ministry told on the condition of anonymity.

On the other hand an important meeting was held Monday in the Commerce Ministry to consider the Indian demand regarding imposition of ban on onions' exports. According to the sources, the meeting decided to maintain the ban at present, as this move had decreased the commodity's prices in the country. The commodity's prices had decreased from Rs 30 to Rs 40 per kg from Rs 80 per kg after the imposition of ban on its export to India.
