'Ban On Wheat, Rice Exports From Govt Stocks' |
Rice and wheat exports have been banned from the government stocks, said Union Food Minister K V Thomas. A decision on the country's wheat and rice exports this season may be taken soon.
India will be launching a food security law soon and any decision on the wheat and rice exports will be taken on that basis. Presently, the government is on the final stages of drafting a Food Security bill that will ensure that the cheap grains are available to 70% of the population.
In the last three years, India has imposed a ban on the export of wheat and common grades of rice, but bumper stocks have led the government to examine whether exports should allowed. India may witness record food grain production of 235.9 million tonnes in 2010-11.
