Subject: Bangladesh team in India to discuss cotton export ban
A delegation consisting of representatives from the Bangladesh Government is in India to discuss the recent ban on cotton exports imposed by India. Though the ban was partially rolled back this month, the ban still exists on new exports.

The team will meet officials from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Cotton Corporation of India (CCI), Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and other bodies.

Mr. Md. Hatem, Vice President of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), informed fibre2fashion, “A delegation from Bangladesh, led by Commerce Secretary is currently in India to discuss the ban on cotton exports imposed by India. Also on the agenda are issues relating to yarn and other textile items.”

“Besides the Commerce Secretary, the Bangladeshi team comprises of Additional Secretary and officials from the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Textiles. They are going to have a meeting with the DGFT, FICCI, CCI and other bodies,” he reveals.

Explaining about the importance of the issue that would be discussed between the two sides, he says, “Bangladesh importers and traders, and in turn, the mill owners have suffered huge losses due to the imposition of ban on cotton exports by India.”

“Bangladesh depends on India for about 40-45 percent of its cotton requirements. If India continues with its ban, then we will have to contact other countries, viz. some African countries, CIS countries, Australia and the US, for our cotton imports,” he opines.
