Carpets Export Up 24 Per Cent In 2010-11 |
India's carpets export jumped 24 per cent to USD 653 million in 2010-11 year-on-year, thanks to the increasing demand from new markets like Middle East and Latin America. In 2009-10, the export stood at USD 525 million. "We had a good number of orders not only from traditional markets like Europe and the US, but also from new markets like Middle East and Latin America," Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC) Chairman O P Garg told PTI. Of the country's total carpets export in 2010-11, Europe accounted for 40 per cent, the US 30 per cent, Middle East 20 per cent and Latin America 10 per cent. Among the categories, which have registered maximum growth are staple synthetic carpets, which grew by 64.21 per cent, followed by silk carpets 27.11 per cent, handmade woolen tufted carpets 23.28 per cent and handmade woolen carpets 22.87 per cent. In March 2011, the carpets exports increased by 27 per cent to USD 74.82 million year-on-year. The council expects the carpets export to grow by 25 per cent in 2011-12 compared to the last fiscal. Carpets export was hit-hard due to the global economic crisis and started reviving since November 2009. The sector employs 2.5 million people.
