Export With Conditions But No Production: SC |

The Supreme Court on Friday said it did not have any objection to conditional export of “ready, available” stock of banned pesticide endosulfan but refused to permit further production.
“We have no objection to exports unless some conditions are met, but it should only be to the extent of stocks available and there shall be no further manufacturing,” a Bench led by Chief Justice of India S H Kapadia said.
On May 13, the court had banned production and sale of endosulfan, a controversial but cheap agrochemical used by farmers.
The court said the ban will be on till a scientific study proves its use safe. The ban includes a freeze on all permits for its manufacture. Two committees of experts, one led by the Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research, and the other by the Agricultural Commissioner were merged and commissioned by the court to study toxicity of the insecticide and whether it is harmful to humans and environment.
